Carpentry & Joinery in Trowbridge

Finding a carpenter in Trowbridge who will measure on site matters, because very few of the town’s walls, floors or door frames are square. Terraces near the centre have moved over more than a century, 1930s semis have bays and picture rails, and post-war and newer estate houses look uniform until you put a spirit level on them.

Our carpentry covers internal and external doors, skirting boards and architraves, shelving, fitted wardrobes and alcove units, boxing in pipework, stud walls and partitions, worktop fitting, flat-pack assembly, decking, sheds and fencing. Much of it is scribing: cutting the timber to match the wall so there is no gap to fill with caulk. Because one person also handles plumbing and electrics, any boxing or partition is planned around the pipes and cables inside it.

If you have a list of small jobs, send it. Short lists are as welcome as big ones. Photos, rough measurements and a note of what you want to keep give us enough to give a free quote with no obligation.

Homes in Trowbridge

Carpentry & Joinery in Trowbridge: what we look out for

Victorian & Edwardian terraces
Door frames lean, floors slope and no wall in a terrace is the same distance from its neighbour at the top as at the bottom. Tall original skirting is usually better repaired or matched than ripped out. The alcoves beside a chimney breast suit shelves and cupboards, and we scribe them against the uneven plaster so you do not end up with a painted gap down each side.
1920s–30s semis & detached homes
Panelled doors, picture rails and bay window surrounds give a 1930s house its character, and new woodwork looks right when it matches them. The space under the stairs often suits built-in storage, and the timber floors upstairs mean skirting and flooring are easier to plan together. We look at both on the same visit, so the skirting sits right on the finished floor.
1950s–70s estate homes
Flush doors, plain skirting and boxed-in pipes are typical here, and all can be updated with better profiles. Where pipes run up a wall, boxing needs access panels over valves and joints so nobody has to dismantle it later. Rear gardens on estates often suit a shed or storage built to fit the plot, on a base that lets water drain away.
Modern & new-build homes
Walls are plasterboard over studs, so shelves, wardrobes and television brackets need fixing into the studs or with the right anchors, never into plasterboard alone. The thin skirting and standard doors are easy to upgrade. Gardens are small and neighbours close, so before building a fence or shed, check the height rules and who owns each boundary.

Planning in Trowbridge

What to plan for with carpentry & joinery in Trowbridge

  • Know what is behind the wall

Before drilling for shelves or a partition, find out where pipes and cables run. In stud walls they often follow vertical lines from sockets and switches. In solid walls they may be buried in plaster. We check with a detector and mark the positions, so a screw does not find a pipe. For a new stud wall we plan the cables and plumbing before the boards go on.

  • Look for damp behind timber

Timber placed against a damp wall rots. In older terraces, solid walls and a missing damp-proof course mean skirting and cupboards can hide moisture for years. Look for tide marks, soft skirting or a musty smell. If there is damp, we deal with the cause, such as a gutter or ground level, and let the wall dry before fixing any new timber to it.

  • Agree boundaries and heights outside

Before fencing, decking or a shed goes up, settle who owns each boundary and whether height limits or other rules apply. Check with the council’s planning team if you are unsure, especially near a road. Agree the line with neighbours first. Posts need firm footings, and timber should stand clear of the soil so it lasts.

Questions

Carpentry & Joinery in Trowbridge: FAQs

Can you build shelves into the alcoves beside my chimney breast?

Yes, alcove shelving and cupboards are a good use of that space. Chimney breast alcoves are rarely square or plumb, so we measure each side separately and scribe the timber to the wall. Shelf thickness is chosen to carry the load without bowing. Send photos with rough widths and heights and we will say what suits.

Can you add a stud wall to split a bedroom in my 1930s semi?

Yes, but plan the details first. The new wall needs ventilation, a door and window arrangement that works, lighting and sockets on each side, and a floor that can carry it. Building Control at the council can tell you what applies, and we confirm what is needed when we quote. Photos and a sketch of the room are the right starting point.

Can you fix the internal doors in my terrace that stick?

Yes. Doors stick because frames move, floors rise under new carpet, or timber swells with damp. Sometimes planing is enough, and sometimes the frame needs adjusting or the door remaking. We check why it sticks first, because shaving a swollen door only for it to shrink later leaves a gap. Photos of the door and the gap help.
