Doors, skirting, alcove units and stud walls built to fit Bristol homes where bays, chimney breasts and old frames are rarely square.
Rated Excellent on Rated PeopleCarpentry & Joinery in Bristol
A carpenter in Bristol soon learns that no wall in an older house is straight. Bay windows meet walls at odd angles, chimney breasts bow, door frames lean and floors have settled over a century or more. Fitted joinery has to be scribed to what is actually there, not what a drawing says, or it leaves gaps that show for years.
That is the day-to-day work: hanging and trimming doors, fitting skirting and architraves, building shelving and cupboards into alcoves, boxing in pipes, forming stud walls and fitting worktops. We make a template of an awkward corner before cutting the real timber, and we check a wall before drilling anywhere that pipes or cables might run. Old mouldings are worth matching where they can be, and a tall Victorian skirting is often easier to repair than to find again. Where a new run is needed, we take a sample of the profile to the timber merchant first.
Outdoors, we build decking, simple sheds, fences and gates. Send us photos and rough dimensions on WhatsApp and we will give you a free, no-obligation quote.

Homes in Bristol
Carpentry & Joinery in Bristol: what we look out for
- Victorian & Edwardian terraces
- Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are the obvious place for shelves and cupboards in a terrace, and the two walls rarely match. Units are scribed to the wall, with filler strips where the plaster bows, and fixings are chosen to suit solid brick. Tall original skirting is better repaired or matched than replaced, and doors often need trimming because the floor has risen or dropped around them.
- 1920s–30s semis & detached homes
- Semis in the northern suburbs have bay windows, panelled doors and picture rails worth matching rather than replacing. A bay seat or window shelf has to follow angled walls that are never quite equal, so we make a hardboard template first. The space under the stairs often suits built-in cupboards or a shoe store, and it is worth deciding what it will hold before the shelf depths are set.
- Flats & apartments
- Before building a partition or hanging a heavy unit in a flat, read the lease and the building rules. Fire doors, shared walls and noise limits can all matter, and a flat entrance door may need to stay a fire door when replaced. Stairwells and lifts limit what can be carried in, so we plan around flat-pack or smaller sections and assemble in the room.
- Georgian & period properties
- Georgian joinery is worth keeping, from panelled doors and shutters to deep skirting and architraves. We repair and match mouldings where we can, rehang doors that have dropped and ease shutters that stick. In a listed building, check before removing or altering any woodwork, as consent may be needed. Fixings go into the solid parts of the wall, not into soft lime plaster.
Planning in Bristol
What to plan for with carpentry & joinery in Bristol
Templates, not guesses
For bays, alcoves and sloping edges, we cut a template from thin board or card and use it for the real timber. If you want to prepare, measure each wall at the top, middle and bottom, not just once, and note where the floor rises or falls. The differences show how much scribing the job will need.
What is behind the wall
Before a shelf, wardrobe or partition is fixed, we find out what is inside the wall. Pipes and cables often run up the sides of chimney breasts and along skirting lines. In solid walls we use the right plug for the material, and in studs we find the timbers first. A detector helps, and so does knowing where your pipes were routed.
Doors and finished floor levels
A door must swing clear of the finished floor, so new flooring, thick carpet or an underlay can make a door catch. If a floor is changing, tell us before doors are trimmed. We fit doors after flooring where possible and check the gaps at top and bottom, so latches line up and the door shuts without being forced.

Questions
Carpentry & Joinery in Bristol: FAQs
Can you build shelves into the alcoves either side of a chimney breast?
Yes, it is one of the most common jobs in a terrace. Alcoves are rarely square, so we measure at several heights and scribe the frame to the wall. Shelves can be fixed or adjustable, or paired with cupboards below. Tell us the depth you want and send photos for a free quote.
Can a door be fitted into an old frame that is out of square?
Usually. The door is trimmed to the opening with an even gap all round, and the hinges and latch are set so it shuts cleanly. If the frame has moved a lot, we may adjust or replace it. Old Georgian and Victorian doors are often better rehung and repaired than replaced. Send photos of the door and frame.
Do you build stud walls, and do I need permission?
We build stud walls from timber with plasterboard on both sides. Whether permission is needed depends on what the wall is for. A simple partition may need none, but fire safety, escape routes and ventilation can matter, and a leasehold flat may need consent from the freeholder. Check with Building Control or your landlord first.
