Home Renovation in Frome and surrounding areas

One person, many trades. Single rooms or whole houses, from plastering to painting.

Home Renovation by a local tradesperson

Home renovation with Fixed & Fitted means one person looking after your project, whether it is a single room, a tired house that needs bringing up to date or a list of small repairs. We do the plastering, carpentry, plumbing, electrics, tiling, fitting, flooring and decorating ourselves, so no job is too small and you only have one person to talk to.

The usual headache on bigger jobs is a string of different trades arriving in the wrong order. When the same person does the stripping out, first fix, plastering, tiling, flooring and painting, the order is planned once, nothing gets cut into after it has been decorated, and nobody has to chase anyone else. That saves wasted time, avoids repeated mess and keeps the job moving in a sensible order.

Larger building projects, including extensions, are a different scale of job, so ask us what is involved. Depending on the project, planning permission or Building Control may apply, and we will explain what to check with your local authority. Message us with what you are thinking about and a few photos, and we will tell you honestly what we can take on and what we would need to see first.

What's included

What we can do: home renovation

Every job is different, so this is a guide rather than a fixed menu. If you do not see what you need, ask.

  • Whole-room and whole-property refurbishment

Stripping a room back, then plumbing and electrical first fix, plastering, fitting, flooring and decorating. For a whole house, we work through it in a sensible order so you are not living in the dust longer than you need to.

  • One person coordinating the trades

Plumbing, electrics, carpentry, tiling, kitchen and bathroom fitting are all done by the same person, so work follows the right order and nothing is held up waiting for a different trade. You get one point of contact throughout.

  • Plastering and skimming

Plastering walls and ceilings, skimming over old surfaces, patching around new sockets and pipework, and repairing cracked or blown plaster. A good finish depends on the surface beneath, so we prepare it properly first.

  • Dry-lining, plasterboard and partition walls

Plasterboarding walls and ceilings, dry-lining over uneven masonry, and building stud partition walls to divide a room or form an en suite. Joints are taped and finished ready for paint or a skim coat.

  • Internal painting and decorating

Preparing, filling, sanding, priming and painting walls, ceilings and woodwork. Most of the work in a good paint job is preparation, so we take time over it and leave clean, sharp lines at edges.

  • Mould and damp problems

We look for the cause first, whether that is a leaking pipe or gutter, condensation or poor ventilation, then fix it and repair the damage. Painting over a damp patch does not cure it, so we do not start there.

  • Property maintenance and repairs

Small repairs and maintenance jobs, such as patching walls, replacing a rotten board, resealing around a bath or sorting a sticking door. A list of odd jobs is fine, and we can often group them into a single visit.

  • Extensions and larger building projects

Bigger projects, including extensions, need more planning than a refurbishment, so ask us what is involved. We will tell you honestly what we can take on and what you need to check with the council beforehand.

How it works

How a home renovation job runs

  1. Tell us what you have in mind

Message us on WhatsApp with photos of the rooms and a list of what needs doing, in rough order of priority. It does not matter whether it is one repair or the whole house.

  2. We walk round together

We visit to look at the condition of walls, floors, ceilings and services, check for signs of damp, and agree what is in and out of the job. This is where we spot issues that photos hide.

  3. Written quote and order of work

You get a free written quote and a sensible order of work: strip out, first fix, plastering, second fix, decorating. We flag anything that may need planning permission or Building Control before it becomes an issue.

  4. Strip out and first fix

Old fittings and finishes come out, any hidden problems are found and dealt with, and pipework, cabling and stud walls go in. We keep you updated if the walls reveal anything that changes the plan.

  5. Finish, snag and hand over

Plastering, tiling, fitting, flooring and decorating are completed in turn. We then walk round with you, put right anything that is not quite right, clear all the rubbish and hand the rooms back clean.

What affects the quote

We do not publish prices because no two homes are the same. Here is what moves the number, so you know what to expect when you ask.

Get an accurate quote
  1. 1

    Size and number of rooms

A single bedroom and a whole house are very different jobs. The number of rooms, ceiling heights and the amount of surface to plaster or paint all feed into how long the work takes.

  2. 2

    What is behind the surfaces

Old plaster, hidden pipework, rotten timber and previous repairs only show once finishes come off. We allow for what we can see and explain what might change, so surprises are discussed with you before we carry on.

  3. 3

    How many trades are involved

A repaint is one trade, while a kitchen and bathroom refresh needs plumbing, electrics, plastering, tiling and fitting in the right order. More trades means more planning, though having one person doing them all keeps it simpler.

  4. 4

    Cause and extent of damp

Condensation from poor ventilation is a very different job to a leaking pipe or gutter. The cause and how far the damage has spread decide how much has to be opened up, dried out and repaired.

  5. 5

    Permissions and structural work

For extensions or structural changes, planning permission or Building Control involvement may apply depending on the project, which affects the plan and the order of work. Ask us what is involved before you commit to anything.

  6. 6

    Finishes, materials and access

Standard finishes cost less to fit than complicated ones, and working in an occupied home, up several floors or with limited parking affects the work. Send photos and rough sizes of every room involved, so we can quote accurately.

Home Renovation advice by property type

Older and newer homes throw up different surprises. Here is what we look out for.

Victorian & Edwardian terraces
Solid walls and, often, no damp-proof course mean damp and condensation are common. Check the cause, such as gutters, pointing or ventilation, before replastering. Chimney breasts, sagging ceilings and old plaster over lath all turn up, so we assess the walls before deciding what to strip.
Georgian & period properties
Lime plaster and breathable finishes generally suit these walls, and modern non-breathable products can trap moisture. If the building is listed or in a conservation area, check with the council before altering plaster, walls or windows. High ceilings affect access, and original features are worth protecting.
Stone cottages & farmhouses
Thick stone walls hold moisture and ventilation is limited, so damp is a common question. We look at gutters, ground levels and airflow before decorating over anything. Walls are uneven, so plaster should suit the stone. Expect surprises behind old finishes, and we flag them as they appear.
1920s–30s semis & detached homes
Cavity walls, bay windows and original small kitchens and bathrooms are typical. Condensation and cold spots around bays and chimney breasts are a common cause of mould. These houses work well for a room-by-room refurbishment, and we plan the order so the house stays liveable.
1950s–70s estate homes
Standard layouts make planning simple, but plumbing and wiring are often original. Some older textured ceiling coatings can contain asbestos, so do not sand or scrape them. Tell us what you have and we will say how to get it checked before any work starts.
Modern & new-build homes
Plasterboard on stud, tight tolerances and basic finishes are typical. Common jobs include new partitions, replacing builder-grade fittings and sorting condensation in well-sealed homes where ventilation matters. Check whether altering things affects any cover that came with the house before you start.
Flats & apartments
Check your lease and with the managing agent before structural or wall changes, and ask about working hours and access. Damp can come from a neighbour or shared pipework, so we help trace the source first. Partitions and plasterboard suit flats well, but check any fire or sound requirements.

Questions

Home Renovation FAQs

Do you take on small jobs as well as big projects?

Yes, no job is too small. A patch of plaster, a sticking door or a list of odd repairs is as welcome as a full refurbishment. Because we cover most trades ourselves, small jobs that would normally need several different people can often be done in a single visit.

How do you quote for a renovation?

Quotes are free and without obligation. Message us on WhatsApp with photos of the rooms and a list of what you want done, then we visit to look at the condition of the property. The written quote sets out what is included and the order of work, so you know what to expect before agreeing anything.

How long does a home renovation usually take?

It depends on the size of the property and how much work is involved, so there is no single answer. A single room is a smaller job than a whole house, and surprises behind old walls can change things. We explain the likely order of work and keep you posted as the job goes on.

Can you deal with damp and mould?

Yes, we start by finding the cause, such as a leaking pipe or gutter, condensation or poor ventilation, then fix that and repair the damage. Cleaning or painting over mould without fixing the cause rarely lasts. If a problem turns out to be bigger than we can sort, we will tell you honestly.

Can I stay in my home during a renovation?

Often yes for one or two rooms, though it is harder for whole-house work, especially if the kitchen and bathroom are both out of action. We talk this through when we quote and plan the order of work to keep as much of the house usable as we can.

Do you build extensions?

Ask us what is involved. Extensions and other larger building projects need more planning than a refurbishment, and depending on the project, planning permission or Building Control may apply. Message us with details and some photos, and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we can take on.
