Rated Excellent on Rated PeopleFlooring in Bristol
Hiring a flooring fitter in Bristol is mostly about what lies underneath. A Victorian terrace has timber on joists with air bricks to keep it dry, a 1930s semi has concrete downstairs and boards up above, and a flat has a slab and a neighbour who can hear every footstep. The finished surface can only be as good as the base it sits on.
We lift the old floor, check the subfloor with a long straight edge, and deal with what we find: loose or sprung boards, humps and hollows, old adhesive, and signs of damp. Levelling compound, boards or a moisture membrane go down where needed, then the underlay and the new floor, followed by thresholds, trims and refitting the skirting. Rooms are laid out from the straightest wall so the cuts at the edges look deliberate.
We lay laminate, vinyl, LVT, sheet vinyl and linoleum, and floor tiles too. Send a few photos of the floors and rough room sizes on WhatsApp and we will give you a free, no-obligation quote.

Homes in Bristol
Flooring in Bristol: what we look out for
- Victorian & Edwardian terraces
- Timber floors on joists dominate older Bristol terraces, and the air bricks in the front wall are what keep them dry underneath. Never block them. Boards are fixed down where they lift, high edges are planed flat and an underlay stops each board edge showing through the new surface. Hall floors may run from tiles to timber, so the junctions need neat trims.
- 1920s–30s semis & detached homes
- In semis around Horfield, Henleaze and Filton the downstairs floor is often solid concrete, patched in places and carrying old adhesive, while upstairs is boards on joists. That means two methods in one house. Downstairs is levelled and given a moisture membrane where damp is a worry, and upstairs loose boards are secured first. Bays and hallways make awkward cuts, so the layout starts from the straightest wall.
- Flats & apartments
- Flats come with rules that houses do not. Many leases ask for a sound-reducing underlay or limit hard flooring above a neighbour, so read yours before choosing a floor. A concrete slab needs its level and moisture checked, and a door that opens over new flooring may need trimming. Rolls and boxes have to be carried up stairs or in the lift, so ask what hours the building allows.
- Georgian & period properties
- Wide old boards in Georgian houses are rarely flat, and in a listed building they may be part of what is protected, so check before lifting or covering them. Where covering is acceptable, a floating floor can sit on top without being fixed into the boards. Doorways between rooms at different heights need thought, and thresholds should be neat rather than a ramp of filler.
Planning in Bristol
What to plan for with flooring in Bristol
Check the floor with a straight edge
Lay a long straight edge across each room, in a couple of directions, and look for gaps underneath. Hollows and humps tell us how much levelling the floor needs before laminate or vinyl goes down, since thin floors copy whatever lies beneath them. Photos with the straight edge in place let us judge the job before we visit.
Moisture and ventilation
Floors can hold more moisture than you would think, especially solid ones and timber over an unventilated void. We test before laying and fit a membrane where needed. Keep the air bricks clear, and tell us about any musty smell, stains or old leaks. New floors on damp bases swell, curl or smell, and fixing that later is a bigger job than checking now.
Thresholds, doors and heights
A new floor changes height, and that matters where it meets another surface. We plan thresholds between rooms, the clearance under doors and the junction with the stairs before work begins, and choose underlay thickness with this in mind. If a door has to be trimmed, we do that as part of the job, and refit skirting or beading afterwards.

Questions
Flooring in Bristol: FAQs
Can laminate go over old floorboards in a Victorian house?
Yes, once the boards are sound. Loose or sprung boards are screwed down, high edges are planed and an underlay or thin board goes over the top, so the boards do not show through. The air bricks must stay clear, as the timber needs ventilation. In a listed house, check with the council first.
Does a solid floor in a 1930s semi need a damp membrane?
Often it is sensible. Concrete floors from that period may have no damp-proof layer, or one that has aged. We test the base and, where moisture is a concern, lay a membrane or use a surface treatment before the new floor. A floating laminate or vinyl floor on a damp base can swell, curl or smell, so checking first matters.
Can I fit hard flooring in a Bristol flat?
Perhaps, but read the lease first. Many leases need a sound-reducing underlay or consent before hard flooring is laid over a neighbour’s ceiling, and some ban it. The slab also has to be flat and dry. Ask the managing agent what is allowed, then send photos of the room and we will give a free quote.
