Wet Rooms & Showers in Trowbridge

A wet room only works if the water drains and the walls stay dry. We set the falls, tank the room and fit the shower in one go.

Wet Rooms & Showers in Trowbridge

A wet room installer in Trowbridge spends most of the job on things you will never see once it is finished. The fall of the floor towards the drain, the waterproof layer under the tiles and the way the waste leaves the building decide whether a walk-in shower lasts or leaks. The visible part, the glass and the tile and the shower head, is the easy end of the work.

Trowbridge homes give us three very different starting points. Upstairs in an old terrace there are timber joists, probably notched, and a ceiling below that may be lath and plaster. In a 1930s semi the old bath space is often just the right shape for a long walk-in shower, and a ground-floor extension can take a flush, level-access floor. In an estate house we are usually swapping a bath for a shower in the same footprint, behind plasterboard or stud walls that need a proper backer board.

We tank the walls and floor, form the falls, fit the drain or tray, tile, and finish with the screen and valve. Send us photos of the bathroom you have now, plus a note of who will use the shower, and we will give a free quote with no obligation.

Wet Rooms & Showers in Trowbridge: what we look out for

Victorian & Edwardian terraces
A wet room upstairs in an old terrace sits on timber joists. They may be notched, undersized or damp, so the floor is opened up, strengthened and boarded before any waterproofing goes down. The ceiling in the room below is often lath and plaster, which is slow to show a leak and awkward to repair, so the tanking has to be right first time. Solid walls need a sound, dry surface before the membrane.
1920s–30s semis & detached homes
The old bath in a 1930s semi often fills the end of the room, which is about the right size for a long walk-in shower with a glass screen and a flat, easy-to-clean floor. Upstairs floors are timber, so we check stiffness and form the falls on a new surface above. If there is a ground-floor extension with a solid floor, a level-access wet room is simpler there, because the drain can sit within the screed.
1950s–70s estate homes
Swapping the bath for a shower in the same footprint suits a small estate bathroom well. The walls may be plasterboard or thin render, so we fix a tile backer board and tank it before tiling. Old pipework can give modest water pressure, so we test the flow before choosing a valve, and say plainly if a pump or a different type of shower would give you a better result.
Modern & new-build homes
Stud walls take backer board and tanking well, and heavy glass is fixed into studs or noggins. Floors are the harder part: chipboard on joists has to be stiffened and sealed to carry a level-access shower, and the small plastic waste pipe limits the fall. We check how much fall the existing waste allows before choosing between a linear drain, a centre drain or a low-profile tray.

Planning in Trowbridge

What to plan for with wet rooms & showers in Trowbridge

  • Find out how much fall you have

The fall to the drain is what stops puddles. Waste pipes need a minimum gradient, and that can be hard to achieve when the floor is thin or the outlet is already low. Before you choose a linear drain or a flush tray, we trace where the waste leaves the room and work out how much fall is available. That settles whether a true level-access floor is possible or a low-profile tray is the sensible answer.

  • Test the water pressure and flow

A shower is only as good as the supply behind it. Older estate pipework can deliver modest flow, and some showers need more than others. We test pressure and flow at the existing pipes before the valve is chosen, so you do not buy a rain head that only dribbles. If a pump is the answer, it needs space, power and a sensible position.

  • Give the waterproofing time to cure

Tanking goes on in coats, and each coat needs time before the next one, and before any tiles are fixed. Rushing it risks leaks that only show up months later in the ceiling below. We plan the sequence so the membrane is tested, the tiles are fixed and the silicone goes in last, once everything has settled. Keep the new shower unused until we say it is ready.

Questions

Wet Rooms & Showers in Trowbridge: FAQs

Can I turn my old bath into a walk-in shower in a Trowbridge terrace?

Usually yes, once the floor has been checked. Old joists may need strengthening, the ceiling below needs protecting, and the walls need a waterproof backer. A walk-in shower in the old bath space is a common swap in terraces, and it frees up a surprising amount of floor. Send photos of the room and the floor below and we will say what is involved.

Is a wet room the same as a walk-in shower with a tray?

No. A tray sits on the floor and holds the water, while a wet room has a fully waterproofed floor and walls that slope to a drain. A tray is simpler and works where the floor cannot be lowered or sloped. A true wet room gives flush access but needs more preparation. We explain which suits your floor when we quote.

Will a glass screen fit if my bathroom walls are not square?

Yes, but the screen has to be chosen and fixed with that in mind. Walls and floors are rarely square in older terraces, so fixed panels are measured on site and mounted into solid backing, not plasterboard alone. We check the walls with a level before you buy, and allow some adjustment in the fixing.
