Bathroom Fitting in Trowbridge

If you are weighing up bathroom fitters in Trowbridge, the first thing to know is that the room matters more than the suite. A Victorian terrace bathroom often sits in a back extension with a floor that moves, a 1930s semi may have a separate WC next door, and an estate house has one compact room that has to do everything. Each of those starts from a different set of problems.

A full refit with us runs in a sensible order. The old bath, basin and WC come out, and then the walls, floor and pipework are checked while the room is bare. Water supply and waste are altered where the new layout needs them, the walls are boarded and made watertight, and the tiling, suite, extractor fan and lighting follow. Because one person does the plumbing, the electrics and the tiling, nothing waits for another trade to turn up.

Send us photos of the room as it stands, plus a note of what you would like to keep, and we will price it as a free quote with no obligation. If the bathroom is in a flat or an older converted building, tell us that too, as leases and shared pipes change the plan.

Bathroom Fitting in Trowbridge: what we look out for

Victorian & Edwardian terraces
Bathrooms in the older terraces are often a later addition, tucked into a back extension or carved out of a bedroom. The floor may have moved, and the joists beneath it may have been notched for old pipes. Solid walls hold on to damp, so tile adhesion and a good fan matter. We lift the old floor covering and inspect the joists before the new bath is ordered, not on the day it arrives.
1920s–30s semis & detached homes
Many 1930s bathrooms came with the WC in a separate little room beside them. Removing that partition gives a decent-sized bathroom, but pipes and cables often run through the wall, so we find out what is inside before it comes down. Old tiles can hide hollow patches of plaster, which we check, because new tiling needs a sound wall. The soil stack position decides where the toilet can sit.
1950s–70s estate homes
The bathroom in a 1950s to 1970s estate house is small and usually the same shape as the one next door. A short-projection toilet, a slim vanity unit and a shower bath can make it feel larger without moving a wall. Original taps and valves are often tired by now, so while the room is open we replace the ones that are likely to cause trouble later.
Modern & new-build homes
A newer house has stud walls, a chipboard floor and small plastic waste pipes. Basins, toilet frames and heavy mirrors each need timber or boards fixed behind the plasterboard. Chipboard swells if water reaches it, so the floor is sealed and the joints around the bath and shower are treated carefully. Suites come in standard sizes but waste positions are tight, so check the new outlets against the old before ordering.

Planning in Trowbridge

What to plan for with bathroom fitting in Trowbridge

  • Choose the extractor route early

Small bathrooms steam up fast, and solid terrace walls hold that moisture. Decide where the fan will vent before the suite is chosen: through an outside wall, up into the roof void or along a duct. A fan with nowhere sensible to go ends up as an afterthought, and that is how mould starts. We plan the route and the electrical supply together.

  • Check what holds the floor up

Before a bath is carried upstairs, find out what the floor is made of. Terrace joists may be notched or undersized, and chipboard in a newer house marks and swells. A full bath with a person in it is heavy. We open the floor, look at the joists and board over them properly, so the room is firm before any tiling or fixing begins.

  • Flats, conversions and shared stacks

Trowbridge has flats of several kinds, including conversions of older industrial buildings, where pipes, floors and stacks are shared. Read your lease for working hours and any rules on plumbing before you commit to a layout. A leak lands on a neighbour, so waterproofing and joints get extra care, and the old suite has to travel out through shared stairs or a lift.

Questions

Bathroom Fitting in Trowbridge: FAQs

Can a small terrace bathroom fit a bath and a separate shower?

Usually it is one or the other. In a narrow room a shower bath with a straight screen along one side gives you both a bath and a decent shower without eating into the floor space. If the room is wide enough for a walk-in shower instead, we can talk that through. Photos and rough measurements let us say what will fit before you buy a suite.

Should I buy the bathroom suite before you start?

Ideally yes, or at least choose it and get the dimensions, because waste positions, wall boxing and the tile layout all depend on the actual sizes. Wall-hung toilets and heavy basins need support built into the wall, and that is far easier while the room is stripped. If you are unsure what to pick, send photos and we will say what suits the room.

Can you move the toilet to the other wall in my 1930s semi?

Often yes, but the soil pipe decides it. A toilet needs a proper fall to the stack, so the further it moves the harder the waste run becomes, especially across timber joists. We look at the existing stack, the joist direction and where the pipe can run before agreeing a layout. Send photos of the room and the landing and we will say what is realistic.
