Plumbing in Trowbridge

A plumber in Trowbridge needs to know when the house was built, because the pipes tell you. A Victorian terrace may have old pipework under boards and through notched joists, a 1930s semi may still have a lead supply pipe, and an estate house from the 1950s to 1970s has taps and valves that have been working for decades. Newer homes use plastic push-fit pipe hidden behind boxing and stud walls.

We deal with the water side of the house: supply pipes, waste pipes, taps and mixers, toilets, basins, baths, showers, washing machines and dishwashers, isolation valves and leak repairs, with the pipework done neatly and tested before it is covered. For a kitchen or bathroom refit, the plumbing is part of the same job, so the pipes and waste are planned together with the layout.

If you have a drip, a damp patch or a job that has outgrown a quick fix, message us with a few photos and a short description, and we will give a free quote without obligation. A photograph of your stopcock and of the pipes under the sink is particularly useful.

Plumbing in Trowbridge: what we look out for

Victorian & Edwardian terraces
Pipes in an old terrace tend to follow the joists, run under timber floors and hide behind later boxing. A stain on the ceiling below can come from a joint several metres away, so we trace leaks before lifting anything. Cast-iron waste stacks may be nearing the end of their life, and the stopcock is often somewhere unexpected, under the stairs or at the back of a cupboard.
1920s–30s semis & detached homes
In a 1930s house the kitchen supply often runs beneath a solid floor, so moving a sink is a bigger job than it looks. Some houses of this age still have a lead supply pipe, recognisable as a dull grey, soft metal where the water enters the house. If you see one, tell us and contact your water company, which can advise on its replacement.
1950s–70s estate homes
By now many of the original taps, radiator valves and isolation valves in the post-war estates have seized or started to weep. The layouts are simple and the airing cupboard makes it easy to follow the pipes, but old fittings can fail when they are disturbed. We allow for that, and replace tired valves while a section of pipe is isolated.
Modern & new-build homes
Plastic pipe with push-fit connectors is typical in newer houses, running through stud walls, floor voids and boxing. Leaks tend to start at joints rather than along the pipe, so we check the accessible connections and the access panels first. Tight tolerances mean replacement taps and radiators are easiest to fit when they match the existing pipe positions.

Planning in Trowbridge

What to plan for with plumbing in Trowbridge

  • Find the stopcock and isolation valves

Before any plumbing job, locate the main stopcock and check that it turns. In terraces it can be under the stairs, in a cupboard or beneath the kitchen sink. Individual isolation valves under basins, toilets and appliances let us shut off one fixture and leave the rest working. If a valve will not move or weeps when touched, tell us.

  • Hard water and what it does

Water in this part of Wiltshire is generally hard, which leaves limescale on tap spouts and shower heads and inside valves and appliances. Aerators clog, mixers stiffen and seals wear sooner. When we choose replacement taps and shower fittings we think about how easy they are to descale, and where an isolation valve will let you service them.

  • Waste needs a fall, not only a route

A waste pipe must slope continuously to the drain, and the bigger the fixture the more that matters. That is why moving a sink across a solid floor or a toilet across a room is not simply a matter of connecting a new pipe. We work out the route, the fall and the size of pipe before agreeing a layout, and flag it if the answer is no.

Questions

Plumbing in Trowbridge: FAQs

There is a damp stain on the ceiling below my bathroom. Where is the leak?

It may be a supply pipe, a waste joint, a worn seal around the bath or shower, or tiles and grout letting water through. In houses with timber floors the stain is often some way from the source, so we check from above and below before cutting anything. If it is getting worse, switch the water off at the stopcock, then send photos.

I live in a village near Trowbridge. Does it matter if I am not on mains drainage?

Yes, it can matter. Some rural homes in this area drain to a septic tank or treatment plant rather than a mains sewer, and adding a bathroom or changing waste loads can affect it. If you are in a village such as Hilperton, Southwick or North Bradley, find out what yours drains to and tell us when you message.

Can you plumb in a washing machine and dishwasher in a new kitchen layout?

Yes. Each machine needs a cold supply with its own isolation valve, a waste connection with a trap or standpipe, and enough room to pull it out for servicing. We plan the positions with the cabinet layout, so the hoses are not kinked behind the units and the waste has the fall it needs. Send a photo of the current set-up.
