Tiling in Radstock

A tiler in Radstock has to read the wall before choosing the first tile. Terraces built for mining families have solid walls, often with no modern damp-proof course, and moisture low down will push adhesive and grout off in time. Floors upstairs are timber and flex underfoot. Neither problem is the tile’s fault, and neither is fixed by a better tile.

So the work starts with preparation. Loose or blown plaster comes off, uneven walls are boarded or levelled, and timber floors are overboarded or given a decoupling layer, so movement does not crack the joints. Then comes the setting out. The layout is marked from the middle of the main wall or the line of the doorway, so cuts at the corners are balanced and the pattern lands where your eye goes first. In a bathroom, the waterproofing goes on before any tile does.

Grout colour, tile size and pattern are for you to choose, and we will say what works in a small room: larger tiles mean fewer lines, smaller ones cope better with an uneven wall. Message us some photos of the walls and floors you want covered and we will give you a free, no-obligation quote.

Tiling in Radstock: what we look out for

Victorian & Edwardian terraces
Walls in a Radstock terrace are solid, often with old lime or sand and cement render, and they can be hollow or damp in patches. We tap them, check for salts and soft plaster, and strip back to something sound. Timber floors flex, so a tiled kitchen or bathroom floor goes onto an overboarded or decoupled base. An original tiled hall floor should be photographed before anyone lifts it, as repair is often the better choice.
1950s–70s estate homes
Estate bathrooms and kitchens from the 1950s to 1970s often have textured wall finishes, painted-over old tiles or screeds that sit unevenly. Textured coatings are removed or boarded over, and a levelling layer or fresh board sorts the floor. Small rooms with plain walls suit larger tiles, which cut down on grout lines, as long as the wall behind them has first been made properly flat.
Stone cottages & farmhouses
In stone cottages, ground floors can be flags or a solid slab with little damp protection, and tiles laid on a wet base will fail. We test the base before laying and say frankly if it needs more time or a membrane. Uneven stone makes very large tiles highlight every hollow, so smaller tiles and plenty of levelling work better, and fireplace hearths and alcoves need patient cutting.

Planning in Radstock

What to plan for with tiling in Radstock

  • Check the wall before the tile

Run your hand over the wall to find cold, damp or crumbling areas, and look for white salts or flaking paint. If the wall is wet, the tiles will not last, so the cause should be found first. In Radstock terraces it is often outside: a leaking gutter, blown pointing or soil banked up against the wall. Tell us what you notice when you message.

  • Setting out and awkward cuts

Tiles are laid from a line marked on the wall, not from the corner. Working from the middle of the main wall means cuts are even at both sides and none ends up as a thin sliver. Windows, chimney breasts and fitted units bring awkward cuts, so choose the tile size knowing that large tiles show an out-of-square wall more than small ones do.

  • Movement joints and flexible sealant

Grout does not bend, so flexible sealant is used where wall meets bath, tray, worktop or floor, and at internal corners. A timber floor that moves slightly will show first at those joints. Leave the adhesive and grout time to cure before the room is used, and ask us how long the particular products need, as it depends on the tile and the base.

Questions

Tiling in Radstock: FAQs

Can you tile over the old tiles in my Radstock bathroom?

Sometimes, if the old tiles are firmly stuck, flat and dry. Tapping them tells us: a hollow sound means they must come off. Tiling over adds thickness at doors, windows and trims, and any damp behind the old tiles gets hidden rather than cured. In older terraces we usually prefer stripping back to the wall so we can see what is behind.

Why are the tiles coming off my wall?

Most often moisture, movement or poor preparation. A solid wall holding damp pushes the adhesive off from behind, while a flexing board or an unsealed gap lets water in at the edges. We look at the wall, the grout and the floor before suggesting a fix. Simply re-sticking tiles to the same wall rarely lasts if the cause is still there.

What size tiles suit a small bathroom with uneven walls?

Medium tiles are usually the sensible choice. Very large ones need a perfectly flat wall and make every hollow obvious, while tiny mosaics create many grout lines to keep clean. On older walls we level or board first, then recommend a size that fits the room and the wall. Send photos of the walls and say which tiles you like, and we will talk it through.
